Key Advantages
Advantages Over “Go Fast Wet-Subs”
Don’t be fooled. At first glance, “go-fast wet subs” might look similar to the FBS—but the differences are massive.
In a wet sub, occupants are directly exposed to the cold-water environment and must wear scuba or rebreather gear throughout the dive. That limits mission durations to just a few hours and restricts their usefulness to maybe one or two mission types at best.
The FBS, on the other hand, features a dry, pressure-boundary cabin. Its crew stays warm, dry, and unaffected by pressure change and are not limited to a small supply of SCBA or rebreather air. This unlocks long-duration missions, extended loitering capability, and the flexibility to handle a wide range of operational profiles far beyond the reach of traditional wet subs.
Advantages for Smaller Governments
Affordable Subsea Capabilities: Most governments cannot afford any real degree of subsea capability, given the procurement costs and support expenses of a “blue water” submarine. But now, the FBS can offer an affordable alternative, capable of providing a government with a substantial degree of nearshore deterrence, ISR and other capabilities. It is worthy to note that nearly 30 FBS platforms could be procured, and deployed (providing a simultaneous range of functions) for the same cost as that of a single Dolphin Class diesel electric submarine.
